A short history of the Jonathan Harvey Trophy 2009 During a meeting with Jonathan Harvey in January 2008. Jonathan Harvey intimated that they would be very interested in sponsoring a competition at the club along with the advertising they had undertaken. The 125 committee discussed this offer and after consideration elected to accept the offer from Jonathan Harvey and the125 Trophy was placed on the events calendar for 2009. The format the committee decided on was that of the very successful Millennium Trophy sponsored by Mr Peter McIntosh, as over the years many great days bowling had been enjoyed by the members due to the different format. The format of the single and pairs games being played off in the morning and the triples in the afternoon to get to 4 semi finalists normally ensures that a few teams are still capable of qualifying up to the last game. After a meeting with the sponsor they agreed with the proposal that 3 bowling clubs from each of the areas Jonathan Harvey have an office in would be invited, along with all the Clydebank and District clubs, to give us a total of 24 invited clubs to compete in the competition. The balance of the 12 teams would be supplied from Clydebank Bowling Club incorporating the Millennium Trophy day with the permission of Mr McIntosh. The competition would be held on four consecutive Sundays, dates to be agreed with the club secretary, and in the end the dates agreed were the 4 Sundays in June. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, the first date was cancelled which allowed 6 clubs to qualify from each day to achieve the 12 clubs for the final. The first round of games were played on the 14th of June and the Winners were George Bruce, Sam McGeachie Jnr and frank McGinley Runners up were Raymond Barr, Billy Adams and Billy Parker. Also qualifying for the Finals day on the 28th of June were Willie Riach, Sandy Darroch and Tom Bowater along with Kenny McKenzie, Jim Russell and Grant Russell On the 21st of June we had another fine day of Bowls and the following teams qualified for the finals day of the 28th of June were: Old Kilpatrick Bowling Club West Dunbartonshire District Council Bearsden Bowling Club Yarrows bowling Club Singer 1980 Bowling Club Radnor Park Bowling Club This meant that the final line up for the finals day were: Qualifying teams from Clydebank Bowling Club: K McKenzie, Jim Russell, Grant Russell Peter McIntosh, Brian Aitchison, Brian Purdie Frank McGinley, Sammy McGeachie Jnr, George Bruce Tommy Bowater, Sandy Darroch, W Riach ( Replaced by Ian Graham in Final) Billy Parker, Billy Adams, Raymond Barr W Darroch, Jimmy Irwin, John Orr. In the boardroom, Mrs Gallagher provided us with an excellent and informative history of Jonathan Harvey and their close ties with local communities. We have rarely had such a captivating speaker and we look forward to the opportunity to welcome Mrs Gallagher back to the club. The club has already started discussions with Jonathan Harvey regarding the possibility of their continued support for this competition in 2010. Our thank go to Jonathan Harvey for their continued valued sponsorship, Mr McIntosh for allowing the 125 committee to hijack his competition for 2009, Vic Smyth for all his hard work in preparing the cards and score sheets, the marker, runners, caterers, bar staff and the players on the days for making this competition the success it was in our 125 years. Would you expect anything less from Clydebank Bowling Club??
